Volunteering

There are a variety of volunteering opportunities available in Libraries, Museums, and Active Rutland, for those with a few hours to give to assist our staff in delivering a quality service in Rutland.

What could I gain from my volunteering role?

  • A chance to meet new people
  • An opportunity to learn more about books and the library service, history & heritage, or sports
  • A sense of achievement with helping people from different backgrounds, and of different ages, access a library and choose their next read, or take part in other cultural activities
  • Involvement in museum volunteer projects
  • Involvement in the newly refurbished Oakham Castle
  • Experience to add to a CV, or towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award

What support will I be given?

  • Induction to the Service
  • Support and guidance for your role
  • Training on our procedures relevant to your role
  • Agreed out of pocket expenses where relevant
  • An opportunity to attend volunteer coffee mornings
  • Some roles may have additional training opportunities

How do I apply?

Take a look at the volunteering opportunities on the ‘Volunteer Plus Rutland‘ website, or at the list of current opportunities below and decide whether you think you could assist us. Please fill out the volunteering application form below (sections 1-6, you only need to fill out the references section if the role you are applying for requires them).

If you are applying for a role in a specific service, please write on the envelope which department you are volunteering for if you know it: e.g. Libraries, Museums, or Active Rutland.

Once we have received your form we will ask you to come in for a chat to discuss the role and what you would like to get out of volunteering with us.

Any special requirements?

Volunteers must be over 16 (except in the case of our tailored Duke of Edinburgh when offered, and Summer Reading Challenge volunteer roles) and able to commit themselves to regular attendance. Some roles will require a Disclosure & Barring Service check and/or References if they involve working with Children and Vulnerable Adults. For example, many Library volunteering roles may therefore require a DBS. If the role you are interested in requires these, it will be stated on the role description.

What opportunities are there?

There are a variety of roles active within the service including: shelving, Local Studies research, Housebound delivery, help with events, Research, etc. Most of our volunteer opportunities are currently full. Please see below for any specific volunteer roles open for applications.

We’re always keen to hear from prospective volunteers, so please get in touch with us if you are interested in getting involved, or fill out and send our Volunteer Application Form (PDF) to libraries@rutland.gov.uk
